How Excursions Benefit English Language Learning at Summer School

Spending the summer at a boarding school in England is an excellent way to learn English and experience British culture. At Thames Valley Summer Schools (TVSS), students go on excursions that combine learning English with educational sightseeing. At each of our four schools, students enjoy one full-day and one half-day excursion each week included in their fees. Optional excursions, usually to London or Birmingham, are also available for an additional fee.

These excursions are a highlight of the programme for many students. They are also an excellent way for them to improve their English. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits that they bring.

Excursions Are Built Upon What Students Learn in Our Summer School

The excursions offered by TVSS are linked to the academic materials your child will study in class. Your child’s learning is enhanced by putting into practice the skills they develop in our programme. Before, during, and after excursions, for example, your child will have activities to complete. These activities will build on what your child has learned at our English language summer school and supplement it with new activities.

For instance, students attending Ascot, Epsom, or Leatherhead take part in a full-day excursion to Greenwich, the location of the National Maritime Museum and of Greenwich prime meridian. During this excursion, students are able to put their knowledge of time, directions, and geography to use. They complete quizzes and challenges related to their visit, which help develop their vocabulary and pronunciation. Encouraged to explore the museum and find famous explorers, count the different kinds of boats or ships they see, students practise their English in a fun and engaging way.

Excursions Are Opportunities to Use English in the Real World

One of the advantages of studying at an English language summer school in the UK is that your child is surrounded by English every day. Being able to listen to and speak English constantly allows students to develop their English language skills at a rapid pace. While classroom learning is essential, using English in the real world is often the best way to learn.

Excursions are chances for your child to use the skills they have acquired in class in real situations. For example, if your child goes on a tour of the Natural History Museum—they will learn about this iconic building in English. Likewise, students attending Rugby have a chance to visit the beautiful medieval town of Stratford-upon-Avon. There they will be able to visit Shakespeare’s birthplace and witness actors bringing the writer’s influence to life through speech and song in English.

Learning About English Culture Can Help Your Child Learn About the World

Acquiring a new language also unlocks that language’s culture. With our excursions to some of Britain’s most significant cultural and historic sites, your child will learn about British culture. For example, students at all of our schools go on a full-day visit to Oxford, home to one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities. They will even get to visit New College, a beautiful and historic college that is over 600 years old.

On other excursions students learn not just about British culture, but about world culture too. For example, students will visit the British Museum, one of the largest museums in the world. There they see artefacts from all over the world, including important collections from Egypt, Greece, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
