Tennis Academy at Sevenoaks School - Summer 2017

A recent comment by one of the all-time tennis greats, Boris Becker, compared Roger Federer to sporting legends Muhammed Ali (boxing), Michael Jordan (basketball) and Pele (soccer). Federer is frequently referred to as a GOAT (Greatest Of All Time).

Rod Laver, the last man to win the four grand slam tournaments in the same year (Australian, French and US Opens, and Wimbledon) and the only person to do this twice, says Federer hasn’t played so well for ten years. Laver even said “I might venture he’s playing the best tennis of his life”.

Indeed, in 2017, he has a win / loss record so far of 19-1, winning the Australian Open, and the ‘Sunshine Double’ of Indian Wells and Miami Open titles.

In addition to his phenomenal natural talent, one of the reasons for Federer’s success is his incredible work ethic during training, according to his fitness coach since 2007, Pierre Paganini. He also said that because of Federer’s enormous potential and coordination, he needs to work on his strengths even more, not less, to make a difference to his game.

Another key reason for being able to achieve such brilliant form at 35 years old is, as his coach says, ‘passion’. He simply loves the game and really enjoys the talent that has been given to him.

Practice, passion and being creative – trying and learning new techniques are key to sporting success.
