The school was founded in 1877 as a boy’s preparatory school. Among its former pupils was the famous British war-time Prime Minister Winston Churchill. It became a girl’s finishing school between 1904 and 1923, and has been a girl’s boarding school since then.

Overview

History

St George’s was founded in 1877 by The Reverend Herbert William Sneyd-Kynnersley as a boys’ Prep School. Sneyd-Kynnersley is listed on the Plantagenet Roll as being of Royal Blood and was the son of a Birmingham magistrate. He taught Greek and Latin, publishing books on those subjects – ‘Greek and Latin for Beginners’ and ‘Latin Prose Composition‘ – both still available to buy now on the internet.

In 1904 it became a finishing school for girls, opened by Miss Pakenham-Walsh. In 1927 the school was recognised by the Department of Education. In 1932 the swimming pool was built and in 1943 the sports facilities were extended with tennis courts and games field. From 1939 to 1945 the school functioned during the war and air raid shelters were made to give protection.

St George’s has won the Tatler, Best School Food for Independent Schools in the UK Award, and there is no doubt the food is spectacular and for many a real highlight of the school day!

Set in beautiful grounds

The grounds comprise 30 acres of fields, woods, streams and heathland and the brick buildings have an elevated position with good views. The school is close to Windsor Great Park and opposite the Ascot Racecourse, only 5 minutes' walk from Ascot High Street. Ascot is world famous for its racecourse, used for thoroughbred horse racing and is closely associated with the Royal Family, being approximately 10 km from Windsor Castle. Ascot is 40 km west of central London, with fast and frequent trains to Waterloo station (journey time 50 minutes). Heathrow airport is 17 km from the school (less than 30 minutes by coach).
